Products
Where are your products made?
At first, we made our seed bombs in Derk’s mother’s basement in Nordhorn. We weighed the individual components with a kitchen scale, mixed everything in a mixing bowl, and rolled each seed bomb by hand. Since then, not much has actually changed. We moved from the basement to a production hall, the mixing bowl became a cement mixer, and the kitchen scale became a bathroom scale. But production is still done by hand, and every single seed bomb is unique.
In the meantime, however, we have also received some additional support. Since 2014, we have been working with Lebenshilfe Nordhorn, a regional workshop for people with disabilities, as well as with other sheltered workshops.
Where do you source your seeds?
We source our native seeds from specialist suppliers such as Volmary (Münster) and Bardowick Saaten (Lüneburg) in Germany.
Do you also offer gift vouchers?
Yes, you can purchase €15, €30, or €50 gift vouchers for our shop and print them out yourself right away: Buy a gift voucher now.
When can I scatter your flower marbles and seed bombs?
The ideal time to throw our flower marbles and seed bombs is between May (after the Ice Saints) and August. It’s important that no severe frost is expected anymore. After that, the rule is: the earlier you throw the seed bombs, the longer you can enjoy the flowers.
How long do your seed bombs last?
If you store your seed bombs or flower balls in a dry, cool, and dark place, they will keep for at least two years. Only after that does the germination capacity of the seeds gradually decline. But really, they’re far too beautiful not to scatter and enjoy the colorful flowers, aren’t they?
How many seed bombs or flower marbles do I need for 1 m² of soil?
Roughly speaking, about 10 seed bombs or 30 flower marbles fit per square meter.
My seed bombs or flower marbles aren’t growing. What am I doing wrong?
For our seed bombs and flower marbles, we use only the best ingredients: black potting soil, clay powder, and high-quality, locally sourced seeds from specialist retailers. We take a few balls from each batch of seed bombs and conduct germination tests to ensure quality.
Despite our high quality standards, we are and remain somewhat inferior to nature. However, we have put together a few tips on what you should keep in mind for the best possible throwing results:
- Throw the seed bombs onto loose soil: The delicate roots of the seedlings cannot take hold on hard, dry ground. Therefore, make sure to throw them onto loose, black potting soil so they have the best possible start.
- Do not bury them: Even if it sounds almost too easy: the seed bombs or flower marbles should simply be thrown, placed, or rolled out. Unfortunately, they will not grow if you bury them in the soil. So save yourself the tedious bending down.
- Water, water, water: Our seed bombs need a great deal of water! Especially at the beginning, it is important to water the brown balls thoroughly so they can absorb plenty of water. You can tell when enough watering is enough by whether the seed bomb can be pressed like modeling clay. Be sure never to let the seed bombs dry out!
Sunny spot: Our various seed bombs and flower marbles contain dozens of different seed varieties, some of which thrive in the sun, while others also do well in the shade. Depending on the location you choose, you will get a corresponding result. In general, however, the more sun, the more abundant the blossoms. In particular, our Italian Garden, Wild Herbs, and Sunflower varieties are true sun lovers and unsuitable for shady spots.
Do seed bombs also grow on grass?
No, because the seedlings’ roots are initially too delicate to compete with the strong grass roots in the soil. So it’s best to throw the seed bombs onto loose soil.
Do seed bombs work indoors?
Yes, you can also plant seed bombs indoors in a flowerpot. Just make sure they get enough space and light.
What color are your flower marbles dyed?
Our colorful flower marbles are dyed with natural coloring made from cornstarch and food coloring. So if they ever end up in children’s mouths because they look like candy, it’s completely harmless. They still don’t taste good, so they probably won’t stay in their mouths for long.
